2 years agoStaff Report

CHICAGO (July 12, 2022) – Marquee Sports Network has announced the premiere of The Remarkable Life of Ron Santo, an hour-long documentary produced by MLB Network looking back on the life and career of the Hall of Famer. Presented by Budweiser, the Marquee Sports Network Films documentary will debut Saturday, July 16 at 5 PM CT, immediately following coverage of the Cubs-Mets afternoon matchup on Cubs Postgame Live!

Narrated by Santo’s long-time radio broadcast partner Pat Hughes, The Remarkable Life of Ron Santo explores his family upbringing, battle with Type 1 diabetes, extraordinary playing days and memorable time in the broadcast booth. Including stories and insights from Santo’s family and former teammates, along with archival interviews with Santo, the film provides viewers with a unique glimpse into the legendary third baseman’s life.

“When I first began working with Ron Santo, I referred to him as ‘Cubs legend Ron Santo,’ and I feel like that applies now more than ever,” said Cubs broadcaster Pat Hughes. “Ron remains one of the funniest people I have ever known, simply by being himself.”

A native of Seattle, Washington, Santo spent 14 seasons with the Cubs from 1960-1973, earning nine All-Star Game selections and five Gold Gloves at third base. In his 2,243 game career, Santo blasted 342 home runs, notched 1,331 RBI, and led the National League in both putouts and assists seven times in the field.

Following his retirement, Santo’s voice became revered by baseball fans nationwide as he broadcasted Cubs games on the radio for two decades until his passing in 2010. Known for his unbridled enthusiasm and emotion, Santo’s calls live on in the annals of Cubs history. Santo is recognized by the organization in multiple ways, including having his number 10 retired in 2003 and having a statue unveiled outside Wrigley Field in 2011. He was enshrined posthumously in the Baseball Hall of Fame in 2012.

“Ron Santo has a uniquely special bond with Cubs fans, recognized both for his dazzling on-field performance as captain of the memorable Cubs core of the 1960s and 70s, as well as for his legendary broadcast calls on the radio,” said Marquee Sports Network SVP Programming and Production, Mike Santini. “We’re honored to have the opportunity to share his story as part of our Marquee Sports Network Films series in partnership with our colleagues at MLB Network.”

The Remarkable Life of Ron Santo is the fifth documentary produced by MLB Network for Marquee Sports Network Films, following More than Mr. Cub: The Life of Ernie Banks, Glory and Grief: The Ferguson Jenkins Story, Billy Williams: The Sweet Swinger, and Mayor of Rush Street on the life of Harry Caray, which earned a Chicago/Midwest Regional Emmy Award for outstanding sports documentary.
