The complicated history between Sammy Sosa and the Cubs

4 weeks agoMatt Danielewicz

Sammy Sosa issued an apology to the Cubs on Thursday, one step for fans who have waited for the organization to welcome back the all-time franchise leader in home runs.

As Bruce Levine eluded to on a special edition of Cubs 360, there has been complicated history between Sosa and the team.

“There were transgressions during his career. You had the corked bat incident against Tampa, and you had him walking out there and then again just admitting to what the era was all about,” Levine said. “I covered every game that Sammy played for the Chicago Cubs, and I go back to when he was with the White Sox before he was traded for the great George Bell. With those things in mind, people make mistakes. This happened to be in front of millions of people that took on a different category for people to look at and for the Ricketts family, who didn’t own the team at the time when Sammy was there. There were disappointed fans when the steroids era came out, and there was talk about it.”

Sosa’s final game in a Cubs uniform was in 2004 against the Atlanta Braves. Twenty years later, Levine believes Sosa had to come clean and that the apology was positive.

“I kept my relationship with Sammy [Sosa] through the years, and he’s wanted badly to get back and just to be able to see the Cubs fans and walk into Wrigley Field with his head held high,” Levine said.
