Sammy Sosa talks PED testing, Cubs tenure and more in candid interview

3 weeks agoJack McDonaugh

In an interview with USA TODAY’s MLB columnist Bob Nightengale, Sammy Sosa was asked about potential PED use and steroids during his playing career.

“That’s a very delicate route,” Sosa said to USA today, “you know what I mean? But come on, nobody was blind.”

Sosa was back in the dugout and wearing a Cubs uniform for the first time in 21 years this spring.

This came after his statement in December, admitting to making “mistakes” during his playing career. He was later elected to the Cubs Hall of Fame at Cubs Convention in January this year.

In the interview with USA TODAY, Sosa reflected on his time in the league however he made clear that, at that time in MLB, there weren’t the laws or regulations there are in today’s game. He helped bring baseball back with a ferocity in his home run race with Mark McGwire in 1998.

McGwire finished with 70 home runs that season while Sosa ended up at 66. McGwire has since publicly apologized for steroid use, though Sosa has not admitted PED use and his apology in December was more vague.

But Sosa did share a similar sentiment as McGwire, who acknowledged in 2023 that PED use was “widespread” within the MLB game since there was no testing.

“I read Mark’s interview,” Sosa told USA TODAY, “and I agree with what he said. There was no testing. There were no rules. We didn’t break any laws.”

Despite the dark cloud hanging over that era, Sosa said he is happy with what he was able to accomplish during his career.

“I’m still proud of what I did,” Sosa told USA today. “I had great years, I never tested positive. And anyways, there were no rules. No rules back then. None.”

Now that he is back with the Cubs organization for the first time in over two decades, Sosa is excited and already making an impact on the Cubs current roster.

Sosa was seen chatting with Cubs infielder Vidal Bruján during a spring training and in his next at-bat Bruján homered.

Having a slugger and a personality like Sosa back in the organization can certainly help the Cubs and their pursuit of returning to playoff baseball.

And for his part, Sosa is happy to be back around baseball.
