Seiya Suzuki exits Cubs’ game vs. Dodgers with right wrist injury
Seiya Suzuki has formed a strong 1-2 punch with Kyle Tucker atop the Chicago Cubs’ lineup.
That might have a taken a hit Saturday night in Los Angeles.
Suzuki was due up with two on and two outs in the fifth inning and the Cubs clinging to a 1-0 lead. Instead, Miguel Amaya walked up to the plate as a pinch hitter.
The Cubs announced that Suzuki had exited the game with right wrist pain. Manager Craig Counsell said after the game that Suzuki is “day to day” with the injury.
“There’s some discomfort there, so just being cautionary,” Suzuki told reporters through interpreter Edwin Stanberry after the game.
Suzuki initially felt the pain during Monday’s home game against the Texas Rangers when he slid into second base. He has played through it but saw it flare up Saturday.
“When I was sliding headfirst, I felt some discomfort,” Suzuki said. “I was playing through it, and then today felt it a little bit, so I’m just being cautious.”
Amaya flew out to left field to end the fifth-inning threat, but he homered later in the game, which the Cubs won 16-0.
Suzuki entered Saturday slashing .302/.400/.556 (.956 OPS) with four home runs and 15 RBI. He’s been a strong hitter throughout his four-year MLB career, with a lifetime .279/.356/.473 slash line (.830 OPS) with 59 home runs and 208 RBI.
Suzuki’s problem has been his inability to stay on the field, as he hasn’t played more than 138 games in a season, leading to a bit of a frustrating tenure in Chicago. Suzuki ranks 19th in baseball in weighted runs created plus with 135, 35 percentage points above league average, since 2023. That’s ahead of players such as José Ramírez, Rafael Devers and Pete Alonso.
Suzuki missed one month in 2022 with a left ring finger sprain, and he then missed 10 days on the paternity/restricted list near the end of the year. A left oblique strain caused him to miss the first few weeks of the 2023 season, and a right oblique caused him to miss nearly a month last year.
If Suzuki is placed on the IL, the Cubs could activate Vidal Bruján, who’s on a rehab assignment with Triple-A Iowa. They also have Kevin Alcántara and Owen Caissie on the 40-man roster in Iowa, if Bruján isn’t ready.
