Shota Imanaga Topps Rookie Debut Patch card sells for $82K at auction

3 weeks agoTom Prizeman

Shota Imanaga continues to set records, on and off the field.

The Chicago Cubs ace just had his Topps Rookie Debut Patch 1-of-1 card autograph sell at Goldin’s April Elite Auction for $82,961 — the fourth-highest figure in the program’s history.

The card, which features a patch from Imanaga’s jersey from his debut start, also is signed by him.

Started in 2023, Topps’ debut patch program creates 1 of 1, completely unique cards featuring the patch the player wears and then has removed after the game, and is authenticated by the card company and MLB.

The memorabilia market has exploded in value and popularity in recent years, and Imagana’s card was the fifth card to sell for more than $50,000 — but not even close to the top spot. Pittsburgh Pirates sensation Paul Skeenes’ Topps Rookie Debut Patch 1-of-1 autograph card sold for a jaw-dropping $1.1 million, making it the most expensive modern baseball card publicly sold since 2022.

The owner of the card featuring the patch from Imanaga’s debut can fondly look back at that start, as the Cubs left hander threw six scoreless innings, allowing just two hits and striking out nine against the Colorado Rockies on April 1, 2024.

Imanaga, 31, debuted with the Cubs after 192 appearances with the Yokohoma Bay Stars of the NPB in Japan, where he was a two-time All-Star and owned a 74-55 record with a 2.94 ERA in over 1,100 innings.

Cubs fans can hope Imanaga continues to dominate and create more memorabilia worthy moments at The Friendly Confines.
