The Cubs have drawn national praise for offseason moves
The Cubs had a busy offseason as Jed Hoyer and his front office set out to build a roster that could get the franchise back into the playoffs.
With Alexander Canario designated for assignment Thursday, that now marks 22 players who are no longer with the organization from the final 40-man roster in 2024 (including players on the 60-day IL).
But Hoyer and Co. have utilized this roster churn to improve not only the team’s ceiling, but also its floor.
Kyle Tucker is chief among those offseason acquisitions, as the Cubs got the star player they sought at the beginning of the offseason.
But the Cubs roster also has a lot more quality depth than in the past, including Justin Turner (whose signing became official Thursday) catcher Carson Kelly and a slew of pitchers led by Ryan Pressly.

It’s those moves that led the Cubs to earn a spot in the offseason “Winners” category on ESPN.
And in The Athletic’s spring training survey of MLB insiders, the Cubs earned the 3rd-most votes (17) for the most improved team in the National League behind the Dodgers (32 votes) and Mets (30).
The Cubs also earned the best trade of the offseason in that same survey with the Kyle Tucker acquisition. That move beat out the Garrett Crochet trade and the Devin Williams deal.
One voter said: “This is the first time (in years) that the Cubs actually had an impact player like this in the middle of their lineup. Up till now, they had a lot of good players, but not this kind of player.”
The Cubs’ offseason was not without detractors, however. Six of the MLB insiders in The Athletic’s survey voted for Matthew Boyd as the worst free agent signing, thought that’s a pretty subjective category. Juan Soto – one of the game’s greatest players who just signed a $765 million deal – drew the most votes (10) for the worst free agent signing (mainly because of the length and pricetag).
