The Cubs stole an out with a bizarre play against the Marlins

4 weeks agoTony Andracki

Part of the beauty of baseball is the chance to see something truly unique on a daily basis.

That was exactly what occurred Sunday afternoon in Miami.

The Cubs stole an out against the Marlins in the bottom of the 8th inning on an intentional walk.

Yes, really.

After a single and a double put Marlins runners on second and third to start the inning, the Cubs opted to intentionally walk the next batter, Jesús Sánchez.

Sánchez was then pinch-run for, but the Cubs halted play and threw over to first base, where the runner was called out.

It was a bizarre play, as Sánchez did not actually make it all the way to first base on the intentional walk. And since he didn’t touch the bag, he was subsequently called out.

Pat Hughes said on the Marquee Sports Network broadcast that he had never witnessed a play like that before and Craig Counsell acknowledged the same thing after the game.

“I’ve never seen that, no,” Counsell told reporters in Miami. “I didn’t really know the rule but the fact that he didn’t touch first base just looked odd so we made sure we appealed it.”

In the end, it didn’t matter much as the Marlins still tallied 4 runs in the frame off Cubs reliever Julian Merryweather to put the game out of reach. The Cubs lost 7-2 and were unable to finish off the sweep and move up the Wild-Card standings.
