The story behind Shota Imanaga’s special All-Star walk-up song

5 months agoTony Andracki

Shota Imanaga has utilized a Chicago staple for his walk-out song at Wrigley Field this season: “Chelsea Dagger,” a song made famous during the Blackhawks Stanley Cup titles.

But for his All-Star Game appearance on Tuesday in Arlington, the Cubs rookie chose a different tune.

“Be Like Mike” blared through the speakers at Globe Life Field as Imanaga came out to throw a perfect 4th inning for the National League squad.

So why the change in song?

It was an ode to Michael Jordan, the most legendary sports figure in Chicago history. It’s also a nod to the name Imanaga uses on his coffee order – Mike.

“I talked to people around me who support me, we decided on the song,” Imanaga told reporters in Texas through interpreter Edwin Stanberry. “Obviously I want to be like Mike, however he’s so great. I have to put in a lot of work to get there. Hopefully once I do, the people of Chicago, all the fans, they can accept me.”
