‘Time to make some noise’: Cubs are looking to flush difficult sweep in Cleveland

11 months agoAndy Martinez

The Cubs had a poor series in Cleveland.

The players feel there’s no point in dwelling on it.

“Lost 3, now we have to punch back, and it feels like that’s kinda been the story of the season,” Cubs starter Jameson Taillon said after the Cubs’ 6-1 loss to the Guardians. “So hopefully we can punch back and not turn these three into something bigger.”

They entered the series riding a wave of momentum — they had clawed back into the Wild Card race and were a game under .500. They leave after being swept by Cleveland — the first time they’ve been swept in a series of 3 games or more this season — 5.5 games out of the playoff picture and 4 games below the break-even point.

“All that matters is where you are in the standings and who’s in front of you,” Taillon said. “We definitely were at one point pretty far under [.500] and we’re clawing back and I feel like that’s a sign that we’ve been playing a lot better baseball.”

The Cubs hope the schedule can be what helps them flush the sweep. They play 18 straight games against teams under .500 — they won’t play a team with a winning record until they host the Yankees on September 6.

A good stretch in that span can have them right back in the hunt — but the Cubs won’t be looking beyond the present.

“Not a ton of time, but I’m just invested in my process and showing up the next day and doing my work,” Taillon said. “I know that’s not a fun answer, but I mean it doesn’t really matter where we’re at, we have to give the same effort every single day and everyone has to do their job.

“I’m aware of where we are and who’s in front of us and what that means and the urgency, but I feel like most of us show up every day trying to get better, trying to prepare, trying to win a ball game, urgent, regardless of where we are.

“It’s time to make some noise and just play our best ball.”
