Top prospects featured on Cubs roster for MLB Spring Breakout Games

1 week agoAndy Martinez

The Cubs have set their roster for next week’s spring breakout games.

The team, along with MLB, announced the players that will be participating in the minor-league showcase in Arizona. The Cubs’ roster features three top-100 prospects that will take on the Dodgers at Camelback Ranch on March 13 and host the Angels on March 15 at Sloan Park.

The contest against the Angels will air on Marquee Sports Network at 8:05 CST.

Top pitching prospect Cade Horton, the Cubs’ 2022 1st-round pick, headlines the 23-player pool. Horton is in big-league camp but was always a longshot to crack the team’s Opening Day roster.

On the position player side, catcher Moisés Ballesteros, the team’s no. 4 prospect, per MLB Pipeline and infielder James Triantos (no. 4, per MLB Pipeline) are the two most prominent names.

Ballesteros, 21, and Triantos, 22, are both still in big-league camp, but like Horton didn’t figure to be in the Cubs’ plans for Opening Day. That doesn’t mean there wasn’t value to having all three around the major league team.

“I think you put great players on the field with players you think can get to that level,” manager Craig Counsell said earlier in camp. “There’s going to be learning that goes on, there’s gonna be watching, there’s gonna be listening. That’s what you hope for.”

A few notable top Cubs prospects were not on the roster released on Thursday. Top prospect Matt Shaw is still in big-league camp and is competing for the Opening Day third base job and very well could be on the flight to Japan for the Tokyo Series next week.

Outfielder Kevin Alcántara (no. 89 prospect, Cubs’ no. 6) is still in big-league camp and was not named either. Owen Caissie (Cubs’ no. 3 prospect) suffered a groin injury, was optioned to minor-league camp last week and will not be on the roster, either.
