Ultimate Cubs Lineup Tournament: Andracki, Will advance to semifinals

4 years agoTony Andracki

Things are starting to get real in the Ultimate Cubs Lineup Tournament.

We’re days away from crowning a champion and determining who truly put together the best combination of former Cubs players.

Tuesday marked Day 2 of the second round, packed with thrilling moments to decide the fate of four of our analysts.

All matchup simulations were run by Strat-O-Matic, the market leader in sports simulations.

Rick Sutcliffe vs. Tony Andracki

Sutcliffe Andracki Matchup

FINAL: Andracki 6, Sutcliffe 3

For the second straight matchup, my squad advanced, but needed extra innings to do so.

Sutcliffe’s Sluggers got out to a 3-run lead, with an unearned run and an Andre Dawson RBI double in the 1st inning. Dawson later added an RBI single in the top of the 3rd, knocking in Billy Williams.

But that was all Sutcliffe’s Sluggers could manage for the rest of the game as Jake Arrieta (7 innings) and Lee Smith (4 innings) shut down the lineup the rest of the way. Smith picked up the victory for the second straight game for Team Tone Zone.

It took a while, but my lineup put it all together late in the game, with 3 runs in the 7th and 8th innings to send it to extras. In the bottom of the 11th, after singles by Gabby Hartnett and Javy Báez, Kenny Lofton smacked a 3-run, walk-off homer.

It was the 4th RBI of the game for Lofton, who also singled home a run in the 7th. Báez came off the bench to go 2-for-3 as part of a double switch that put him at third base and Kris Bryant was subbed out for the pitcher’s spot (Smith).

Team Tone Zone now moves on to the semifinals, taking place Wednesday on Cubs 360 Daily at 7:30 p.m.

Menaker vs. Will

Menaker Will Matchup

FINAL: Will 4, Menaker 2

Team Menaker got out to a great start, with the first three runners of the game reaching base. Ryne Sandberg doubled, Kris Bryant walked, Anthony Rizzo knocked a run home with a single and then Sammy Sosa drove in Bryant with a sacrifice fly.

Four batters in and Menaker’s squad already had a 2-0 lead.

Except that’s all the offense they were able to muster…

For Team Will, Fergie Jenkins settled in after that rough frame, finishing with 7 strong innings to pick up the win while Mordecai “Three Finger” Brown collected the save with 2 shutout innings.

Will’s lineup quickly evened the score in the bottom of the 1st with a 2-run homer by Ernie Banks. The squad later added a couple more tallies on a Sandberg homer and Jenkins RBI single to coast to victory.

Menaker’s starting pitcher, Greg Maddux, threw a complete game and struck out 11, but the 4 runs were enough to knock her team out of the Ultimate Cubs Lineup Tournament.

Will moves on to the semifinals Wednesday on Cubs 360 at 7:30 p.m.
