Ultimate Cubs Lineup Tournament: DeRosa, Deshaies move on to second round

4 years agoTony Andracki

The Ultimate Cubs Lineup Tournament is off and running, where each Marquee Sports Network analyst gets a chance to put their team to the test.

First up, we had a pair of former Cubs facing off with Mark DeRosa and Carlos Peña followed by the showdown of broadcast partners with Len Kasper and Jim Deshaies.

All matchup simulations were run by Strat-O-Matic, the market leader in sports simulations.

DeRosa vs. Peña

Pena Derosa Matchup New

Final: DeRosa 1, Peña 0

In the first game, DeRosa eked out a 1-0 victory despite managing only 2 hits in the contest. Greg Maddux threw 8 shutout innings and struck out 13 while Kerry Wood came in to get the save with a perfect 9th inning.

Team DeRosa was actually getting no-hit until the top of the 9th when, with 1 out, Alfonso Soriano tripled and Billy Williams followed with a single to drive home the only run of the contest.

Mordecai “Three Finger” Brown, Peña’s pitcher, threw a complete game and even went 1-for-3 with a single at the plate, but it wasn’t enough to get his team the win.

For Peña, Sammy Sosa, Anthony Rizzo and Gabby Hartnett also collected hits. They threatened in the bottom of the 6th when Hartnett and Brown both singled and Ryne Sandberg bunted them both into scoring position, but Sosa and Ron Santo followed with strikeouts to end the rally.

DeRosa now moves on to the second round of the Ultimate Cubs Lineup Tournament, which will begin Monday, June 8.

Len vs. JD

Kasper Deshaies Matchup

FINAL: Deshaies 4, Kasper 0

Deshaies got the better of his broadcast partner in the second matchup, riding his old school lineup to victory. He chose only Cubs players from 1920-1960 because he felt the players from that era deserve more love and the move paid dividends early.

Deshaies’ pitching duo of Pete Alexander and Mordecai Brown combined to allow only 4 hits in 9 shutout innings. Brown — normally a starter — tossed 2 innings in relief of Alexander.

For Team Kasper, Maddux picked up the loss, surrendering 4 runs (2 earned) on 9 hits in 8 innings.

Deshaies got on the board early with a solo shot off the bat of leadoff hitter Kiki Cuyler in the top of the 3rd. In the 5th, a 2-base error by Kasper’s centerfielder Hack Wilson helped lead to another pair of runs for Deshaies.

Alexander, who scored a run in the 5th, singled home another tally in the 6th after Hank Sauer’s double.

Kasper’s squad managed only 4 hits with a Cap Anson double serving as the lone extra-base knock.

Deshaies will move on to the second round of the Ultimate Cubs Lineup tournament next week.
