How latest Wade Miley injury impacts Cubs

2 years agoAndy Martinez

A day after exiting his start early, Wade Miley was placed on the 15-day IL with a left shoulder strain. Michael Rucker was called up to take his place on the roster.

Miley had been activated from the IL Friday, pitched 3 innings and then exited in the 4th inning after throwing his warm-up pitches to start the 4th inning. It’s created another opening for the Cubs who have rearranged some of their rotation in the short-term.

It’s Miley’s third trip to the injured list. He started the season on the injured list with an elbow injury, made three starts and landed on the IL a second time with the same shoulder injury that landed him on the IL this time.

David Ross told reporters in New York that Keegan Thompson would pitch Sunday’s finale against the Yankees. Justin Steele and Kyle Hendricks will start the first two games of the Cubs’ series against the Padres on Monday and Tuesday, respectively.

It’s the second consecutive day a Cubs starter has landed on the 15-day IL, as the team placed Marcus Stroman on the IL prior to Friday’s opener in New York.

The question becomes who will start for the Cubs on Wednesday against San Diego? Alec Mills is an option — he’s stretched out and threw just 13 pitches on Friday. Caleb Kilian could be an option — he pitched Friday for Triple-A Iowa, going 3.2 innings and allowing 3 runs on 7 hits while striking out 6 — but the Cubs would have to make room on the active roster for him. The Cubs are in the middle of a 17-game-in-17-day stretch, so it’s unlikely they’d roll with someone like Matt Swarmer, who started Saturday against the Yankees, on short rest.
