Would David Ross consider carrying three catchers?

4 years agoMatt Danielewicz

Willson Contreras, Victor Caratini, Josh Phegley and P.J. Higgins are catchers on the roster for summer camp. Kyle Schwarber can serve as an emergency catcher given his experience. Len Kasper and Jim Deshaies discuss whether David Ross would consider carrying three catchers on the Opening Day roster on Cubs 360 Summer Camp.

In yesterday’s scrimmage, Schwarber, Contreras and Phegley each hit home runs. Deshaies has high hopes for Schwarber and Phegley.

“Schwarber was so good especially in the second half of last year. He looks like he is ready to take off this year. Phegley is an intriguing guy. He’s going to get a chance with the expanded roster. I think there’s a really good shot that David Ross will start the season with three catchers,” Deshaies said.

Deshaies also believes that having three catchers will provide flexibility.

“If I’m Rossy, I want that flexibility. You got a 30-man roster. Yes, you need extra pitching but, I don’t know if you need that much. That third catcher allows you to use Caratini’s bat a little bit more often,” Deshaies said.
