Wrigley Field voted best MLB ballpark by Sports Illustrated

2 weeks agoMatt Danielewicz

The Chicago Cubs won their first two games this season at the best ballpark in Major League Baseball.

That’s because Sports Illustrated recently ranked Wrigley Field No. 1 among its peers, with Nick Selbe concluding: “Is this a predictable choice for MLB’s best ballpark? Yes, but predictable isn’t so bad in baseball. Like a hot dog and a cold beverage or the seventh inning stretch, ranking Wrigley Field No. 1 just feels right.”

Marquee Sports Network contributor Bruce Levine joined “Cubs Live!” on Sunday to share what he believes makes the Friendly Confines such a special place for fans to visit.

“All you have to do is walk up the stairs, walking through the facility and walking up, and you see the beautiful green field, and from May on, you see those walls, and you are hooked as a fan forever,” Levine said.

Oracle Park, PNC Park, Fenway Park and Petco Park rounded out SI’s top five.

From a former player’s perspective, Cliff Floyd appreciates Wrigley’s “neighborhood” feel.

“The big thing that I’ve enjoyed over the years is the neighborhood aspect of it,” said Floyd, who played in 82 games at the ballpark during his 17-year MLB career. “Wrigley is just unique in its own way. As a player, you come in and you see guys take it all in. The bleachers are crazy throughout the whole game, so for me, it’s just everything about it. The ivy grows in by the time the summer hits, and it’s just a beautiful place.”

Even current players have sentimental emotions of playing at Wrigley Field. Cubs pitcher Matthew Boyd soaked in the moment before he took the mound Saturday against the San Diego Padres.

“Every time I take that walk on the field, I just try to take a moment and soak it in.” Boyd said after the Cubs’ 7-1 win. “Because you are a big-league baseball player, now I’m pitching for the Chicago Cubs at Wrigley Field.

“My grandfather would have loved this. I know what it would have meant to him, I know what it means to my dad, just to put on this uniform.”

Levine agrees there’s no place like working at The Friendly Confines.

“When you’re in the media, you feel fortunate to be able to go to work. Instead of an office, I get to go to Wrigley Field,” Levine said. “The reality of as a fan just going there and just enjoying it, taking it all in, screaming for your team, enjoying the food, it’s the greatest experience that an American fan can have in sports.”

The Cubs will wrap up their series against the Padres on Sunday, then start a three-game set against the Texas Rangers on Monday. Those in attendance no doubt will enjoy their time at baseball’s best ballpark.
