2024 MLB Winter Meetings Monday Live Blog: Hot Stove heating up in earnest

1 month agoAndy Martinez and Tony Andracki

DALLAS — The annual Winter Meetings kick off in earnest on Monday with meetings, media availability and more.

But from a fan perspective, Sunday night proved to be the jumping-off point for what’s sure to be a busy offseason.

Juan Soto reportedly came to terms on a whopping, 15-year, $765 million contract with the New York Mets, a stunning move for a generational talent — one that could have an impact on the Cubs.

Cubs manager Craig Counsell is scheduled to speak this afternoon, as managers have media availability the next two days at the Hilton Anatole Resort.

We’ll keep you posted on the events of the day with our running blog:

Will the Cubs make a trade this offseason? Jed Hoyer spoke on the possibility Monday evening in Dallas:

The Cubs have a surplus of outfielders – right now, Cody Bellinger, Ian Happ, Seiya Suzuki and Pete Crow-Armstrong figure to play every day between the three outfield spots and DH.

Beyond that, the Cubs also have a slew of prospects knocking at the door of the big leagues, ready to make an impact in Chicago. That list includes Alexander Canario, Kevin Alcántara and Owen Caissie.

Cubs manager Craig Counsell addressed the media on the first full day of Winter Meetings and spoke on a range of topics, including Cody Bellinger’s return, the organization’s prospects and what moves could still be in store for the team this winter:

The Tigers have reportedly added to their rotation:

Cobb, 37, is a veteran righty who has 13 years of MLB experience under his belt.

His 2024 campaign was marred by injury as he made just 3 starts with the Guardians.

When healthy, he has been a solid mid-rotation starter over the last few seasons with a 3.75 ERA and 1.29 WHIP since the start of the 2021 campaign.

The Cubs have already added Matthew Boyd to the rotation this winter but will look to build out their starting depth this offseason.

2 p.m. update

The Cubs may be closing in on their new catcher:

Kelly, 30, was born in Chicago before his family relocated to Oregon.

The right-handed-hitting veteran catcher has bounced around during his 9 years in the big leagues, playing for the Cardinals, Diamondbacks, Tigers and Rangers.

In 91 games in 2024 in Detroit and Texas, Kelly hit .238/.313/.374 (.687 OPS) with 0.5 WAR, 9 homers and 37 RBI.

He is seen as a solid defensive catcher with some pop and was a former Top 50 prospect in baseball (No. 46 on MLB.com’s list in 2018) who was once a central part of the trade that sent Paul Goldschmidt from Arizona to St. Louis.

The Cubs are looking for a veteran catcher to pair with Miguel Amaya behind the plate in 2025.

1:45 p.m. update

Left-handed pitcher Matthew Boyd was officially unveiled as a member of the Chicago Cubs Monday afternoon on a Zoom call with reporters.

The 33-year-old shared a fun anecdote about his family connections to the Cubs and another story on how he kept up with a pair of Cubs pitchers, Shota Imanaga and Justin Steele, during his rehab from Tommy John surgery.

He also praised the Cubs lineup and shared what makes them a tough outing:

12:30 p.m. update

A key reliever is off the bullpen market.

Jordan Romano is heading to Philadelphia to help anchor the Phillies bullpen.

Romano will turn 32 in April and was one of the best relievers in baseball with the Blue Jays from 2020-23, posting a 2.29 ERA, 1.08 WHIP and 97 saves.

His 2024 season was marred by injury and he posted just a 6.59 ERA and 8 saves in 15 games. As a result, the Blue Jays surprisingly non-tendered him last month, making Romano one of the more intriguing bullpen arms available.

The Cubs are looking to reshape their bullpen this winter and could benefit from multiple veteran high-leverage relievers, as the current Chicago bullpen is very inexperienced.

10:45 a.m. update

The Cubs formally announced their 2025 coaching staff. Craig Counsell’s coaching group includes six new faces — José Javier (first base coach), Quintin Berry (third base coach), Casey Jacobson (assistant pitching coach) and A.J. Lewis (staff assistant). Kevin Poppe (head strength and conditioning coach) and Mark Weisman (assistant strength and conditioning coach) also joined Counsell’s staff. Mark Strittmatter moved from major league field coordinator to bullpen coach.

Overnight updates:

  • Reliever Blake Treinen and the Dodgers came to terms on a 2-year, $22 million contract. The veteran righty returns to Los Angeles after helping them win the 2024 World Series. He could have been an option for Jed Hoyer and the Cubs’ bullpen, but a return to Los Angeles made sense for both sides, too.
  • Michael Conforto and the Dodgers came to terms on a one-year, $17 million deal. The outfielder gives Los Angeles a left-handed bat who hit 20 homers and had a .759 OPS with the Giants in 2024.
