2024 MLB Winter Meetings Wednesday Live Blog: Trade rumors swirling
DALLAS — The 2024 MLB Winter Meetings in Dallas come to a close Wednesday.
Things were quiet for the Cubs in the first couple of days — at least on the roster moves front.
But while the Cubs did not make any actual transactions Sunday through Tuesday, the rumors and news poured in fast, from the Seiya Suzuki situation to the potential for a new catcher.

The Rule 5 Draft is Wednesday afternoon, which will effectively wrap up the Winter Meetings, though news and notes will still continue to pour out into the baseball world.
We’ll have you covered all day on all the pertinent Cubs information:
Kyle Tucker rumors Part II:
The Kyle Tucker rumors continue to swirl around the Cubs and have picked up steam around the industry with multiple reporters discussing the potential fit.
That includes Jon Heyman, who Tweeted details about a possible framework:
The Suzuki situation will bear watching, as he has a full no-trade clause and 2 years left on his deal but he has expressed some discontent over being a full-time DH with the Cubs and is exploring a possible trade.

Garrett Crochet trade
The White Sox are once again trading their stud left-handed starter to the Red Sox.
Eight years after the South Siders dealt Chris Sale to Boston, the White Sox are sending Garrett Crochet eastward.
The White Sox receive a quartet of prospects in return, including catcher Kyle Teel, outfielder Braden Montgomery, infielder Chase Meidroth and righty Wikelman Gonzalez.
Crochet, 25, was one of the best pitchers in baseball last year. He posted a 4.1 WAR along with a 3.58 ERA, 1.07 WHIP and 209 strikeouts in 146 innings in a true breakout season.
Rule 5 Draft
The Cubs acquired a 25-year-old left-handed hitting infielder Wednesday in the MLB Rule 5 Draft.
Gage Workman hit .280/.366/.476 with 18 homers and 29 doubles last season for the Tigers Double-A club.
As a Rule 5 pick, he must spend the entire 2025 season in the majors or else he would be offered back to Detroit.
Kyle Tucker-Cubs trade rumors
As the Cubs continue to think of creative ways that they can upgrade their offense, Kyle Tucker’s availability on the trade market could be the perfect solution.
The Athletic’s Ken Rosenthal reported that the Cubs and Astros have held talks about a swap for Tucker with both Seiya Suzuki and Isaac Paredes’ name being thrown around. Sources confirmed the talks between the Astros and Cubs, although no deal is believed to be imminent or close.
Tucker would be the type of star-level, game-changing bat that the Cubs offense has been missing. Tucker posted a whopping 4.7 bWAR, hit 23 home runs and had a .993 OPS while playing just 78 games last season due to an injury. Tucker has been an All-Star, the last three seasons, received MVP votes from 2021 to 2023, won a Gold Glove in 2022 and added a Silver Slugger award in 2023.
The 27-year-old is a free agent after the 2025 season and could command a hefty fee in free agency, and the Astros could be priced out of those negotiations, so cashing in on him would allow them to replenish their system instead of having him walk for nothing in a year. Adding a player like Paredes or Suzuki also would allow them to continue to stay competitive, something they stress they’re doing.
Rosenthal reported that the Astros have interest in Cam Smith, the Cubs 2024 1st-round pick.
Nolan Arenado trade update
One of the Cubs’ main rivals may trade away one of their top players this winter.
The Cardinals are already without Paul Goldschmidt as the veteran first baseman hit free agency this offseason.
Now, St. Louis may be without star third baseman Nolan Arenado as well next season.
The Cardinals are “planning to trade” Arenado this winter, John Denton of MLB.com writes as part of a way to slash payroll and open up more playing time for other players on the roster.

Arenado has a full no-trade clause but worked with his agent, Joel Wolfe, to create a wishlist of teams to be traded to: Dodgers, Padres, Angels, Phillies, Mets and Red Sox (per MLB.com).
The Cardinals are clearly changing directions and headed toward at least a soft rebuild while slashing payroll. That’s good news for the Cubs and the rest of the NL Central.
It might not be such great news for the Cubs if Arenado heads to one of the other teams in the NL (Dodgers, Padres, Phillies, Mets) as it would strengthen squads that look like clear contenders for 2025.
10 a.m. update:
The Rangers and Marlins announced the Jake Burger trade officially Wednesday morning.
Burger will head to Texas for 3 prospects. The 28-year-old hit 29 homers in 2024 and 34 in 2023 with the Marlins and White Sox.
Overnight update:
The Rangers had a busy end of the day Tuesday, between the aforementioned Burger trade and re-signing veteran starter Nathan Eovaldi.
Eovaldi will turn 35 in February and has spent the last 2 years in Texas with a 3.72 ERA, 1.12 WHIP and 5.3 WAR in 54 starts in that span.
