Austin Booker might be an X-factor for Bears pass rush in 2025
There’s a lot of chatter surrounding what weapons the Chicago Bears need to add, especially on the offensive line.
However, Chicago Bears play-by-play commentator Jeff Joniak joined the Bears on the Marquee podcast from the NFL Scouting Combine to share that he believes that there also needs to be a focus on adding depth to the defensive line.
“You got to have waves of defenders that all do a little something special,” Joniak said. “You don’t need a guy playing 60 snaps. You need like 5 guys playing 30 snaps and be able to be versatile so they’re excelling on those stunts and twists inside the game that make life difficult for the interior offensive linemen.”
The Bears finished with 40 sacks on the 2024 season, which ranked in the middle of the pack in the NFL. Joniak believes that there’s already a key pass rush player on the roster in 2024 5th-round draft pick Austin Booker.
“I think he’s is a piece of clay,” Joniak said. “Second-year player that’s going to have a benefit of an offseason in the weight room to gain strength. That guy’s got some special gifts, and he plays aggressively and violently when he rushes. I thought he had a high success rate, winning. He may not have had the sacks, but that’s a guy to keep an eye on as well.”

Booker played in all 17 games in his rookie season, racking up 21 total tackles with 14 being solo along with 1.5 sacks. How he develops in his second NFL season and under a new regime in Ben Johnson remains to be seen.
