There are three Bears games left this season, but fans have turned the page after a pair of lopsided losses that have extended a crazy streak over eight straight NFL weeks.

That’s a lot, for anyone.

This Bears streak seems worse because expectations were so much higher than the Giants, Panthers and teams of that class. Chicago wasn’t a Super Bowl contender, but it seemed realistic that they could end up playoff bound. Oh, and they were 4-2 before this mess of a losing streak.

That has put all focus on the future in the mailbag, where most every question centers around who might coach the team or how much culpability Ryan Poles has for this mess. Caleb Williams’ development is a major focus, as are the job prospects of some coaches still on staff. Let’s dive into some of those topics in this week’s Bears mailbag.

What is the likelihood the Bears could hire a defensive coach (Aaron Glenn or Mike Vrabel) & retain Thomas Brown as the OC?

Bair: It seems more likely that the Bears will go with an offensive-minded head coach to partner with Caleb Williams for years to come. There should be some solid defensive coaches available who fit the “leader of men/CEO coach” vibe the Bears are looking for.

Mike Vrabel comes to mind, and should be a good candidate who ends up getting hired in this coaching cycle. He would well be considered here in Chicago. Time will tell on that.

About the concept of having a new coach take on a coordinator. That seems like a longshot. It’s often not done, though it’s not without precedent. It’s just not a regular thing, and it seems unlikely that the Bears would made a touted new head coach inherit a general manager in Ryan Poles and an OC in Thomas Brown. If the Bears land a big-name head coach, he’ll have an entire staff in mind.

The one bright light in this fiasco is we have one hell of a quarterback. Hang in guys, it will get better.

Bair: That’s what the Bears can hitch their wagons to with the playoffs officially out of the picture. Caleb Williams understands that but doesn’t let that inflate his ego and act holier than thou. The Bears rookie quarterback is supremely confident and understands his place in the organization, but generally seems to be a level-headed and mature individual.

While I don’t claim to know him well, that’s my take on how he goes about his business. I’ve covered the NFL for 15 years and have worked with lots of different quarterback talents and personalities. Sure seems like Williams is wired the right way and is good enough to be a franchise quarterback. As long as the organization doesn’t mess things up with bad hiring cycles and personnel choices. The Bears need to get it right, right now. Williams is really good, but he can’t do it all by himself.

I disliked Eberflus’ running of the team ,but having Eric Washington run and call the defense it has gotten progressively worse and the same thing with the offensive coordinator. Thomas Brown being on the sideline calling the plays and being the head coach doesn’t do Caleb Williams any justice!!!!!

Bair: I was critical of Eric Washington’s first game calling plays. He got out-coached by Kyle Shanahan when the Bears and 49ers faced off. I don’t think he did poorly against Minnesota. The Bears got some pressure, stood tall on some short fields and tackled well. It was far from perfect, but Sam Darnold didn’t go off, but the big plays made by Minnesota involved major talents like Justin Jefferson and Aaron Cook.

I agree with you that the current coaching hierarchy has it’s issues – and I’ve said that Matt Eberflus was the better play caller and coordinator – but it become clear that an in-season change at head coach had to be made. It would’ve been better to have Thomas Brown focus on offensive coordinator, but he had player support to take that job. Brown is making the best of a difficult situation, pushing to get a win before the season’s end. So while your points are valid, changes had to get made.
