Bears GM Ryan Poles addresses possible Kyler Gordon contract extension

3 weeks agoKyle Millinowisch

Kyler Gordon was Ryan Poles’ first draft selection as Bears general manager in 2022.

In his three seasons with Chicago, Gordon has been a force in the Bears secondary. During that span he ranks in the Top 3 on the team in the following categories: solo tackles, passes defended, interceptions and fumble recoveries.

He was ranked as Pro Football Focus’ most improved Bears defensive player in 2024. Gordon’s PFF grade of 76.0 was a career high and tied for the 11th-best among NFL cornerbacks.

With one year left on his rookie contract, could an extension be in “Spider-Man’s” future?

“It’s always a priority to re-sign your own,” Ryan Poles said via the Bears on the Marquee Podcast Tuesday, “and Kyler has done a really good job over the last few years making plays and impacting the game.”

“I really believe he’s going to continue to elevate his game to the next level, especially with (defensive coordinator) Dennis Allen’s new scheme.”

Despite being a part of three losing seasons with the Bears, the defense has seen a steady progression throughout his tenure – with Gordon being a driving force.

He intercepted 3 passes during his rookie season in 2022 and 2 passes in 2023. While he was held without an interception this past season, he did recover 3 fumbles – including a spectacular forced fumble and recovery in Week 17 against the Seattle Seahawks at Soldier Field.

The Bears locked down star cornerback Jaylon Johnson last offseason to a 4-year, $76 million contract. The cost of Gordon may not reach the same level as Johnson, but the Bears will try and get an extension done before he reaches free agency.

“Anytime we have the opportunity to (talk about an extension) and it makes sense for both sides, we’ll be in that mix,” Poles said.
