Ben Brown suffers setback, Cubs still optimistic about 2024 return

4 weeks agoAndy Martinez

Ben Brown has suffered a setback in his recovery.

The Cubs are hopeful it won’t put a stop on a potential return this season.

Brown (left neck strain) had been rehabbing in Arizona. But manager Craig Counsell told reporters on Monday in Cleveland that he would be shut down from throwing until he’s symptom-free. There’s no timetable on a return, but Counsell is hopeful he can pitch again this season.

The 24-year-old opened the year in the minors but was called up for the second game of the season when Justin Steele landed on the IL with a hamstring injury suffered on Opening Day.

Brown was a revelation since then – in 15 games (8 starts), he had a 3.58 ERA and 1.08 WHIP. On May 28, Brown struck out a season-high 10 in 7 no-hit innings against the Brewers in Milwaukee.

The rookie landed on the IL shortly after that and hasn’t pitched since June 8. Just last week, Counsell was still confident that Brown — and fellow young pitchers Jordan Wicks and Hayden Wesneski — would pitch for the Cubs this year.

The timeline is going to be pushing the end of the season — Brown will likely need at least a few weeks to build back up and even if he’s just shut down for a week or so, wouldn’t be ready until at least mid-September.
