Bears coach Ben Johnson desires Andy Reid, Bill Belichick-type legacy

2 weeks agoKyle Millinowisch

Does Ben Johnson want to be described as an offensive guru, a whiz kid or a quarterback whisperer?

Johnson is enjoying his first NFL Scouting Combine as the Bears head coach, but he’s already thinking about his legacy in Chicago.

“I want to be a damn good football coach,” Johnson told Big Cat and PFT Commenter on the latest episode of the Pardon My Take Podcast.

Not that those labels haven’t been attached to Johnson in the past, but he has bigger goals with the Bears beyond just building an offensive juggernaut. He wants to win.

“I want to be remembered as Andy Reid-esque or Bill Belichick-esque – that’s what I aspire to be,” he said on Pardon My Take.

Aspiring to be remembered in the same vein as two of the greatest coaches in NFL history certainly should excite Bears fans.

Chicagoans can also get on board their new head coach’s personality.

On the podcast, Johnson was asked a variety of questions varying from whether he prefers cats or dogs to his strategy in utilizing timeouts (in reference to former head coach Matt Eberflus not using a timeout in the Bears’ Thanksgiving Day loss against Ben Johnson’s Detroit Lions).

Later in the episode, PFT Commenter asked Johnson a very interesting hypothetical:

“If there was a button that you could press and if you press the button, the Bears would win 10 Super Bowls, but one random Bears fan would die, would you press that button?”

Let’s just say Johnson was very…um…colorful as he described how badly he wants to win a Super Bowl.

“Can I just give (up) a body part instead?” Johnson replied. “I’ve got the three kids. My wife is already telling me what to do next.”
