Bears QB Caleb Williams ‘fascinated watching’ Ben Johnson’s Lions offense
LAKE FOREST, Ill. – Ben Johnson had some nice things to say about Caleb Williams a few weeks back.
The Lions offensive coordinator complimented the Bears quarterback’s arm talent and creativity a few weeks back, having been impressed by Williams from afar.

Williams was asked about Johnson on Monday, considering he’s a popular candidate the Bears have requested to interview for their head-coaching vacancy.
He didn’t watch the Lions offense while prepping to play Detroit, but he has seen the Lions play, including Sunday’s dominant victory over Minnesota to secure the NFC’s No. 1 seed.
The pair don’t know each other personally, but Williams has come away with positive impressions of a coordinator who led the NFL’s deadliest scoring offense.
“I think he’s been really cool to watch,” Williams said in a press conference. “In our game, I would sit back and watch and just kind of watch and try and learn something … I was fascinated watching because he always had wrinkles for counters and things like that throughout the game. I think he’s obviously done really well so I think it would be cool to see how that all goes down.”
Johnson is expected to interview with the Bears this week. He can do so starting Wednesday, but the virtual conversation must get done before the Lions bye week ends. Forming a Williams-Johnson partnership could be a productive one, if the Bears and Johnson can agree on terms and the direction of the Bears franchise.
Johnson will have plenty of options on the coaching market, or he could stay in Detroit as he did a year ago. It’s clear that Johnson and Williams have respect for each other and it will be interesting to see if they start working together.
