Caleb Williams gives a vote of confidence for Bears head coach Matt Eberflus

CHICAGO — As dark clouds swept over the spacious stadium by the lake late in Sunday afternoon’s game, the symbolism was clear for the Bears.

It was certainly a bleak picture in the 4th quarter, as many Bears fans in attendance at Soldier Field voiced their displeasure with the team’s performance in a 19-3 loss to the Patriots, who had entered the week tied for the worst record in the NFL at 2-7.

Boos rained down at various points throughout the game and then, late in the loss, chants of “Fire Eberflus” broke out.

The Bears are in a tough spot, sitting at 4-5 and losers of 3 straight games.

The offense allowed 9 sacks of rookie quarterback Caleb Williams and mustered just 142 yards – with just 69 net passing yards – while failing to score a touchdown for the 2nd straight game.

After the loss, Williams was asked point blank about whether he still has confidence in his head coach and he answered:

“Am I confident in my head coach? Yes, I’m confident my head coach,” Williams said. “They brought me here for a reason. They brought all of us here for a reason.

“As players, when we’re in the locker room, we know how good we are. We know how good we can be. And right now, we’re not executing, we’re not hitting cylinders. We have all the confidence in each other.”

Williams pointed to how the Bears locker room has responded to the difficult times of late as a credit to Eberflus keeping the team united.

“I’m a young guy, I know, but I’ve also been some locker rooms where you’ve been losing and it’s pretty rough in the locker room after losses,” Williams said. “But to have the stretch that we’ve had so far and the confidence that these guys have in me, the confidence that these guys have in each other, I think that that’s a part of Coach Eberflus instilling that confidence and voicing that confidence of us coming together and being together.”

The Bears have the hardest remaining schedule in the NFL with 6 games against the NFC North (who are all 6-3 or better) as well as matchups with Seahawks (4-5) and 49ers (5-4) teams that are both vying for the playoffs.
