The Bears have named team captains for the 2024 NFL season. There are eight of them in a group that includes quarterback Caleb Williams.

It’s generally unusual for rookies to receive the honor, but far more likely for quarterbacks than other positions.

It’s also warranted, considering the praise Williams has received for being a leader out of the gate. The No. 1 overall pick seems to enjoy that aspect of his role and takes it seriously, using a combination good humor, professionalism and authentic leadership in his role with the Bears.

In addition to Williams, cornerback Jaylon Johnson, receiver DJ Moore, safety Kevin Byard, linebackers Tremaine Edmunds and T.J. Edwards and tight ends Cole Kmet and Marcedes Lewis will also wear the captain’s badge while representing Chicago.

This announcement arrived on Monday morning, when the Bears returned to work after a weekend off. Now the team will focus on their Week 1 contest Sunday against the Tennessee Titans at Soldier Field.

This is a list full of deserving leaders at key positions, including those who will have an impact on special teams, meaning captains will reach all corners of the roster. Also, the fact that Byard was named a captain in his first season with Chicago speaks to his leadership quality and impact in such a short time. The two-time All Pro is widely respected for his play and consistency over a storied career, and should be a quality addition to this secondary and roster as a whole.

Kmet is another good choice, considering his tenure here has lasted longer than most and that he’s committed to establishing a proper team culture.
