How Richard Sherman, Geno Smith believe Pete Carroll could help Bears as coach
Numerous reports about Pete Carroll expressing interest in the Chicago Bears’ vacancy hit this week, and the former Seattle Seahawks coach’s supporters quickly became vocal about the possibility.
Carroll’s NFL résumé is substantial, as he most notably coached in Seattle for 14 seasons, posting a 137-89 record with two Super Bowl appearances and one championship.
And as fate would have it, the Seahawks visited the Bears on Thursday night, giving one of his former players, now-Amazon Prime analyst Richard Sherman, the chance to explain to a national TV audience what Carroll could bring to Chicago as coach.
“He would bring culture. He would bring stability. He’d bring a developmental aspect to it. He’s a coach that can literally get the best out of whatever his players do well,” Sherman said on the “Thursday Night Football Tonight” set at Soldier Field. “You talk about quarterbacks, he doesn’t need world-beater quarterback, he has a young guy, he knows what he does well and what he doesn’t do well, he’ll put them in situations like he did with Russell Wilson, like he did with Geno Smith. … He puts them in the best positions possible for them maximize their potential, and that’s what I think he’d bring to Chicago.
“I think he’s a great defensive coach, but he’s also a great culture builder,” Sherman added. “I think a lot of the coaches around the league look for a lot of things he did well to insert into their coaching philosophy.”
Quarterback Geno Smith, who signed with the Seahawks in 2020 and resurrected his career as their starter in 2022, had nothing but praise for his former coach after Seattle’s 6-3 win.
“Coach Carroll is a special human being,” Smith told reporters. “He’s a believer. He’s a guy who’s always going to be upbeat, he’s always going to fight, and he has one way about him and that’s what I love about him. I think we’re very much the same in that way, that we just go. There’s no stop and we just believe in ourselves, and I think Coach Carroll will go out and help anybody, and I’m a big advocate of his. I love that guy.”
As NFL insider Albert Breer also explained, the Bears are interested in interviewing multiple candidates to take over next season. Besides Carroll, Breer listed former Tennessee Titans coach Mike Vrabel, current Minnesota Vikings defensive coordinator Brian Flores, Detroit Lions defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn and Bears interim coach Thomas Brown as potential candidates. Lions offensive coordinator Ben Johnson has been the candidate most mentioned in recent weeks, though.
Bears fans now must wait and see which of those six names — or perhaps a surprise candidate — are selected to turn around the franchise, but Carroll has two loud voices in his corner.
