Former Bears head coach Dick Jauron dies at 74 years old

Former Bears head coach Dick Jauron has died. He was 74 years old.

Jauron was the Bears head coach from 1999 to 2003 and was named the AP coach of the year in 2001 after leading the team to a 13-3 record in the 2001 season. The Bears eventually lost in the divisional round that season, to the Philadelphia Eagles.

Jauron was an Illinois native who was born in Peoria.

He played for the Detroit Lions and the Cincinnati Bengals. He got his start in the coaching ranks as a defensive backs coach for the Buffalo Bills in 1985 and was named a defensive coordinator in 1995 with the Jacksonville Jaguars. He held that position until he took over as Bears head coach.

He had an overall record of 35-45 as a head coach.
