Bears sign Miles Boykin, Shaun Wade, adding veteran depth to roster
The Bears have added more veteran depth to their roster. Receiver Miles Boykin and defensive back Shaun Wade were added to the mix on one-year contracts, the team announced on Thursday.
Boykin’s signing constitutes a homecoming. The Tinley Park, Ill., native went Providence Catholic and then the University of Notre Dame before starting his NFL career. He spent his first three seasons in Baltimore and the last two in Pittsburgh, though he hasn’t accumulated serious stats at any point in his career. He was on the New York Giants’ and Seattle Seahawks’ practice squads last year.

Boykin will compete for a roster spot and surely be expected to help out on special teams, a point of emphasis in lower-key signings completed after free agency’s initial wave. Tyler Scott might be his main source of competition for a fifth receiver spot should they use one. DJ Moore, Rome Odunze, Olamide Zaccheaus and Devin Duvernay all seem like roster locks moving forward.
Wade spent all of last season on the Chargers practice squad. He was with the New England Patriots before that, playing 20 games with six starts. Most of his action came during the 2023 season, when he had 23 tackles, including two for a loss, and a pass defensed.
He’ll enter a talented and crowded secondary without many open spots. Most of last year’s group will return, enough of those guys for a solid two-deep. Wade must work his way into a role on the team over the course of the offseason program, which starts in earnest on Monday.
Expect a few more of these types of signings, even after the NFL draft is done. The Bears are still working to add depth and competition to the 90-man roster.
