The Chicago Cubs provided injury updates on a slew of players after Wednesday’s 7-6 win over the Los Angeles Dodgers at Wrigley Field.

Porter Hodge was tasked to pitch the ninth inning and preserve a one-run lead over the reigning World Series champions. He worked a perfect frame to pick up his first save of the year, but it was notable that regular closer Ryan Pressly wasn’t on the mound.

The veteran right-hander hasn’t pitched since picking up the win in Friday’s game against the Arizona Diamondbacks, and manager Craig Counsell said Pressly has been a bit banged up.

“Ryan has been having some knee issues,” Counsell told reporters after the game. “We had the knee drained last night.”

The Cubs are off Thursday, but they hope to have Pressly back for Friday’s game against the Philadelphia Phillies. Pressly is 4-for-4 in save opportunities this season with a 2.45 ERA.

Meanwhile, Seiya Suzuki has been dealing with a wrist injury. He initially was in the Cubs’ lineup Wednesday, but he was scratched about an hour before first pitch and replaced by Justin Turner at designated hitter.

“He reaggravated the wrist last night,” Counsell said after the game. “We banned the headfirst slide for Seiya. He’s day-to-day again, unfortunately.”

Counsell said Suzuki “essentially” has a sprained wrist and hasn’t received any tests. The team will evaluate how he feels Friday.

Like the rest of the Cubs’ offense, Suzuki is off to a hot start with six homers, 20 RBI and an .894 OPS.

The Cubs also received a dose of good news-bad news with two pitchers currently on the injured list.

Javier Assad had to leave his rehab outing early Tuesday night with Triple-A Iowa. He has been on the IL since mid-March with an oblique injury and appears to have aggravated the injury.

“Javi had some discomfort in the left side,” Counsell said before the Cubs’ 7-6 win Wednesday. “Unfortunately, he’s on his way to Chicago, and we’ll see the doctors and see what’s going on.”

Reliever Eli Morgan was placed on the 15-day IL on April 15 with an elbow injury. He received a second opinion and was diagnosed with ulnar neuritis, which is an inflamed ulnar nerve.

Morgan is at the Cubs’ spring training complex in Arizona and will be shut down from throwing for two or three weeks.
