Cubs infielder Matt Shaw changes jersey number ahead of Opening Day

Top Chicago Cubs prospect Matt Shaw officially broke camp with the major league team. And he did so while sporting a new look.

Shaw was in the Cubs’ exhibition game lineup against the Hanshin Tigers at the Tokyo Dome with No. 6 across his back of his jersey. Shaw had worn No. 77 during spring training.

Infielder Nicky Lopez, who was in Cubs camp this spring on a minor-league contract, wore No. 6 while he was with the organization. He was cut in the penultimate round of roster reductions before the team departed for Japan.

Shaw had plenty of doubts surrounding his availability for this series. When full-squad workouts began last month, the 2023 first-round pick was a non-participant as he dealt with oblique soreness. He ramped up and began participating in games at the beginning of the month and, on the day the Cubs jetted off for Tokyo, was told he had made the roster.

The 23-year-old is the presumptive favorite to start at third base for the Cubs when their season opens Tuesday against the Los Angeles Dodgers in Japan.

The last Cub to wear that number was catcher Tomás Nido last season. Nido appeared in 17 games for the Cubs before suffering a knee injury.

Fellow backstop Miguel Amaya wore No. 6 during his rookie campaign in 2023, but he swapped the jersey number with veteran David Peralta last spring, when the outfielder was in camp with the team on a minor-league deal. Amaya traded the number for a pretty good return.

Shaw’s jersey number swap comes on the heels of another pretty popular swap. Pete Crow-Armstrong had a friendly basketball-shot wager with president of baseball operations Jed Hoyer that resulted in the center fielder wearing No. 4.
