Four Cubs hitters who could have big night vs. Rangers’ Patrick Corbin

2 weeks agoTom Prizeman

Patrick Corbin’s struggles have been notable the last few seasons, and four Chicago Cubs hitters in Tuesday night’s lineup will be excited to see the 35-year-old Texas Rangers left-hander at Wrigley Field, based on their respective history against him.

Red-hot Seiya Suzuki is slashing .355/.488/.774 (11-31) with four home runs and 12 RBI in his last eight games, and it’s no surprise the Cubs designated hitter has enjoyed a ton of success against Corbin. Suzuki, who will bat No. 2 in the lineup, has hit .400 (4-for-10) with two home runs in his career against Corbin.

Three other Cubs veterans also have handled Corbin well over the years. Justin Turner, who will hit in the cleanup spot, has a .378 batting average (17-for-45), with six extra-base hits, including two homers, against Corbin. Leadoff man Ian Happ is 6-for-16 (.375) with a homer, and No. 6 hitter Nico Hoerner is 5-for-12 (.417) with a double.

Corbin last appeared at Wrigley on Sept. 19th, allowing five runs on eight hits in 4.1 innings and earning a no-decision in the Cubs’ 7-6 win over the Washington Nationals.

Corbin signed a six-year, $140 million deal with the Nationals before the 2019 season, spurning the New York Yankees to go to the nation’s capital, and he came through with a terrific campaign in which the team won the World Series, and he recorded career highs in WAR (5.1) and earned Cy Young votes for the second consecutive campaign.

But Corbin led the NL in losses in the next three full seasons, including a disastrous 2022 campaign in which he went 6-19 with a 6.31 ERA, surrendering 210 hits and 119 runs (107 earned) in just 152.2 innings. After accounting for 6.8 WAR across 2019 and 2020, Corbin was a negative4.1 player in his final four seasons in DC.

Corbin leads the league in losses (63), home runs allowed (122), highest ERA (5.71) and opponents’ batting average (.299) since the start of 2021 (minimum 400 innings pitched).

Corbin hopes to turn things around in 2025, as he’ll make his first start for the Rangers at a frigid Wrigley Field. Fans can watch the action starting at 6:40 p.m. on Marquee Sports Network and the Marquee Sports Network app.
