Will Kyle Tucker re-sign with Cubs? Experts answer contract question

2 weeks agoTom Prizeman

News of Vladimir Guerrero Jr.‘s 14-year, $500 million contract extension with the Toronto Blue Jays isn’t even 24 hours old, but the ripple effects already are being felt across Major League Baseball.

All eyes in the Windy City immediately turned toward Kyle Tucker, as the Chicago Cubs’ newly acquired slugger is in the final year of his contract and projects to be the top free agent available this offseason.

Tucker was noncommittal in his first public comments after the Vlad Jr. deal was announced, telling the media before Monday night’s game at Wrigley Field: “That’s great for him, but everyone’s a little different. Right now, I’m here to play this year and play for the Cubs. So, I’m excited to get out there and play again tonight and just kind of see where everything goes after that.”

Marquee Sports Network’s “Cubs Live!” crew of Cole Wright, Ryan Dempster and Bruce Levine tackled the question of how the Vlad Jr. contract could affect Tucker and the MLB free agent market this offseason.

“The one thing we don’t know is if Tucker is going to like playing in Chicago,” Levine said.

Added Dempster, who played nine seasons for the Cubs: “You don’t want to leave. Most people want to stay a Chicago Cub. The grass isn’t always greener.”

Tucker seems to have settled well so far in Chicago, as the right-handed slugger entered Monday leading the National League in runs, slugging, on-base percentage and OPS, and ranked second in batting average and total bases. Tucker also was named the NL Player of the Week on Monday.

But beyond Tucker’s fit in Chicago, the Cubs re-signing Tucker likely will come down to the money, and Levine pointed out that factor is dependent on more than just the player.

“The key is, this is an ownership issue, as well as the general manager,” Levine said. “This is a generational contract, so you have to look at the industry and where it is going right now. And also look at, ‘OK, how many years is he going to be at the top of his game? How many years are we going to eat on a 10-, 12-year contract, where he is not very good? And how much of our payroll is it going to eat up, especially if there is a salary cap.’ ”

Cubs fans will have to wait and see if this is Tucker’s only season in Wrigleyville or the beginning of a long-term relationship.
