Cody Bellinger swears off chicken wings ‘for five years’ after food poisoning

Cody Bellinger landed on the New York Yankees’ bench Tuesday in Detroit for a very unfortunate reason: food poisoning.
The center fielder, whom the Cubs traded to New York in exchange for pitcher Cody Poteet and $5 million in cash this offseason, was notably missing from the Yankees’ lineup against the Tigers.
The reason for Bellinger’s absence was revealed to be the chicken wings he ate in his hotel room the previous night.
“They were good coming in,” Bellinger told ESPN on Wednesday of his room-service menu choice. “But I woke up at 4 a.m. sweating and just started throwing up for a few hours. It was a tough morning.”

“I can say I will not eat wings for five years,” Bellinger said. “I swear. Because the thought of it right now makes me sick.”
Bellinger, a former NL MVP with the Los Angeles Dodgers in 2019, struggled through the first 15 games of the season with the Yankees, slashing just .206/.268/.294 with a .562 OPS. He slashed .286/.340/.475 (.815 OPS) with 44 home runs over his two seasons with the Cubs. His 2023 bounce-back campaign earned a Silver Slugger Award and finish 10th in NL MVP voting.
The bout of sickness wasn’t much of a scare for the 29-year-old, who was back in the Yankees’ lineup the next day, though he went 0-for-4 with three strikeouts and one walk in a 4-3 win.
“I feel good today,” he said. “I slept a ton last night. My one time before was 24 hours, so I’m just hydrating and getting ready to play.”
Bellinger will have the chance to play his former team in July when the Cubs head to the Bronx for the last series before the All-Star break.
