Contreras’ big day not enough for virtual Cubs

4 years agoAndy Martinez

Saturday’s virtual game between the Diamondbacks and Cubs seemed to be a turning point for Willson Contreras.

The Venezuelan catcher, who had been off to a slow start in the simulated season on MLB The Show 20, ripped a pair of solo home runs against Arizona.

Although Contreras improved his offensive performance in a big way, a late defensive lapse came at an inopportune time for the Cubs.

With runners on first and second in the 8th inning and trailing by 1, the Diamondbacks tried to advance both runners on a wild pitch. Contreras fired a missile to third base to try and get lead runner Chicago-native Alek Thomas out, but his throw sailed past Kris Bryant into the outfield, allowing both runners to cross the plate as the Diamondbacks beat the Cubs 4-3 at Wrigley Field. The Cubs fell to 5-3, while the Diamondbacks picked up their second win of the season, improving to 2-7.

Contreras, who hit .272/.355/.533 with 24 HR and 64 RBI in 2019, had gotten out of the blocks slowly in the 2020 season simulation. Contreras was hitting .192 with a pair of RBI and 8 strikeouts in 26 at-bats.

He broke out of his slump in the bottom of the 2nd. Contreras blasted a solo home run to give the Cubs the lead.

In his next at-bat in the fourth inning, Contreras hit his second home run of the day deep to left. Jason Heyward continued his hot start of the season, going back-to-back with a home run of his own to left, giving the Cubs a 3-0 lead. Heyward is hitting .370/.370/.741 with 3 home runs and 5 RBIs.

But it was the only real offense they could string off Diamondbacks starter Luke Weaver, who pitched 5 innings, striking out 9, while allowing 4 hits.

Cubs starter José Quintana had the Diamondbacks in check, too. Until the 5th, when he allowed back-to-back homers to Christian Walker and Kole Calhoun. Quintana kept the Diamondbacks offense in check otherwise, pitching 6 innings, allowing 6 hits and striking out 2. Quintana has a 3.75 ERA and 1.08 WHIP through his two starts.

The Cubs couldn’t rally after Contreras wild throw and will look to win the series against the Diamondbacks at 1 p.m. on Sunday on our Facebook, @WatchMarquee.
