Cubs call up a pair of young pitchers for a look over final week of season
The Cubs are shaking up their pitching staff heading into the final few games of the 2024 season.
With the playoffs no longer an option, the team will get a look at a pair of young pitchers in the big leagues.
In addition to claiming an intriguing right-hander off waivers, the Cubs also called up a pair of young righties in Caleb Kilian and Gavin Hollowell Monday. In corresponding moves, Jorge López was placed on the 15-day IL with a right groin strain and Trey Wingenter was optioned to the Arizona Complex League.

Kilian, 27, is a familiar name for Cubs fans. He was acquired from the Giants in the Kris Bryant deal back in July 2021 and has made 6 appearances in the big leagues over the last 2 seasons.
He has struggled in those 6 outings (4 starts) with a 12.42 ERA and 2.28 WHIP.
Kilian didn’t fare much better in Monday’s 6-2 loss to the Phillies. He entered after opener Nate Pearson and allowed all 6 runs (5 earned) in 5.2 innings. Kilian gave up 4 walks and 8 hits, including 2 homers.
Hollowell followed Kilian and tossed the final 1.1 innings in the game. He did not allow a run, striking out a batter while surrendering 2 hits.
Kilian impressed the coaching staff in Spring Training before suffering a shoulder injury that kept him out for the first few months of the season.
Since he returned from injury, Kilian pitched pretty well for Triple-A Iowa. In 13 games (7 starts), he is 2-0 with a 3.22 ERA, 1.14 WHIP and 38 strikeouts in 44.2 innings.
Hollowell, meanwhile, was just acquired on Aug. 23 when the Cubs claimed him off waivers from the Diamondbacks. The 26-year-old right-hander has some experience in the big leagues – a 6.20 ERA in 32 games out of the Rockies bullpen from 2022-23.
He has been lights-out for Triple-A Iowa with a 1.93 ERA, 0.86 WHIP and 15 strikeouts in 9.1 innings.
Both are capable of multi-inning stints to help provide some length out of the bullpen.
López has dealt with this right groin strain over the last month. He was placed on the IL for the same issue on Sept. 3, returned on Sept. 18 and pitched on back-to-back days (Sept. 18-19). But he hasn’t seen the mound since then and will now finish the year on the IL.
The 31-year-old veteran was a stellar midseason pickup by the Cubs front office, turning in a 2.03 ERA, 1.09 WHIP, 2 saves and 4 holds across 24 appearances.
López is a free agent after the season but it would not be a surprise to see the Cubs re-sign him to provide some stability at the back end of the bullpen.
