Cubs Spring Training Notebook: Injury updates, prospects shine in Cactus League opener
GLENDALE, Ariz. — As the Cubs work a few players back to health, two prospects hit the shelf with injuries of their own.
Let’s run through them all:
Owen Caissie
The outfield prospect is dealing with left groin tightness, manager Craig Counsell announced on Thursday morning. Counsell also announced that Caissie had undergone core surgery — like the procedure Dansby Swanson underwent — near the end of October, and the team was trying to determine if the injury was connected.
“We’ve got to figure out if this is related, how this is related, or if it’s related, and what’s going on,” Counsell said.
Nico Hoerner
The Cubs second baseman is still going through his throwing and hitting progression following offseason flexor tendon surgery.
“Everything is positive with Nico,” Counsell said. “But we’re still in it. We’re still in a throwing program, part of the rehab.
“We’re gonna manage volume in the swings for the entire season.”
Matt Shaw
Shaw is continuing to ramp up following some left oblique soreness. The leading candidate to be the Opening Day starter at third base, Shaw has been slowed to start camp but is trending positively.
“Shaw is doing great,” Counsell said. “We’re hitting in the cage, so doing really well there, progressing on the swinging, on the throwing.”
Javier Assad
Assad, who has been dealing with left oblique strain since pitchers and catchers reported, has begun playing catch, Counsell said. There is no timetable on a return to pitching off a mound, though.
Brett Bateman
The 22-year-old outfield prospect suffered a right hamate injury and will undergo surgery next week in Chicago. Bateman was an 8th-round pick in the 2023 draft and is in camp as a non-roster invitee.

Prospects shine
Some young players in camp shined in the Cactus League Opener at Camelback Ranch where the Cubs beat the Dodgers 12-4.
Gage Workman, a Rule 5 Draft pick from Detroit this offseason, was 2-for-3 with a 2-run home run and a single. The 25-year-old must remain on the active roster the entire season or be offered back to the Tigers, so this is an important camp for him.

Kevin Alcántara was 2-for-3 with a pair of singles and an RBI and Michael Busch was 2-for-3 with an RBI. Ivan Brethowr, a 2024 7th-round pick, hit a 2-run home run.
Daniel Palencia pitched a scoreless 5th inning for the Cubs, picking up a strikeout and hitting triple digits on the radar gun. Jack Neely had a pair of strikeouts in the 6th.
