Cubs non-roster list includes top prospects and intriguing veterans

2 months agoTony Andracki

The Cubs unveiled their non-roster list for 2025 spring training Friday afternoon.

The group of 20 players are not currently on the 40-man roster but several have a chance at making an impact in the big leagues through 2025 – including possibly even on Opening Day.

The list includes a mix of top prospects as well as some intriguing veterans.

Infielder Matt Shaw is the organization’s top-ranked prospect and will be in big-league camp. At the moment, he appears to have a strong chance at winning the third base role to begin the 2025 regular season slate.

Behind him are fellow top prospects like infielder James Triantos, catcher Moisés Ballesteros and two of the organization’s top young right-handers in Cade Horton and Brandon Birdsell.

All five prospects – Shaw included – reached the Triple-A level last season.

The Cubs are also inviting several other minor-league players to big-league camp: catcher Pablo Aliendo, outfielders Brett Bateman and Christian Franklin, infielder Jonathan Long and left-handed pitcher Riley Martin.

There is also a group of veteran players with MLB experience joining Cubs camp as depth options:

RHP Phil Bickford
RHP Ben Heller
RHP Brad Keller
RHP Brooks Kriske
RHP Trevor Richards
RHP Antonio Santos
LHP Brandon Hughes
C Carlos Pérez
C Reese McGuire
INF Nicky Lopez

Cubs fans will remember Hughes as the left-handed reliever who burst onto the scene in 2022 and posted a 3.12 ERA in 57 appearances as a rookie.

Hughes – who converted from an outfielder to a pitcher – then suffered through a knee injury in 2023 and eventually spent 2024 in the Diamondbacks organization before becoming a free agent again this winter.

Bickford is an interesting signing as well, as the 29-year-old right-hander has had some success in the big leagues. In 2021, he had a 2.50 ERA and 1.03 WHIP in 56 games in the Dodgers bullpen.

Richards has spent 7 seasons in the big leagues working as both a starter and reliever with the Marlins, Rays, Blue Jays, Brewers and Twins. He had a 3.20 ERA in 15 relief appearances for Craig Counsell and the Brewers in 2021.

McGuire, 29, is a former 1st-round pick (14th overall) of the Pirates in 2013. He has over 350 games of experience in the big leagues and spent the last 2 years with the Red Sox. He also played for the White Sox in the beginning of the 2022 season.

Pérez, 34, has appeared in 278 MLB games for the Angels, Braves, Rangers and A’s. Both Pérez and McGuire serve as veteran catching depth behind Miguel Amaya and Carson Kelly. Ballesteros – one of the team’s top prospects – could also factor into the catching mix at some point in 2025.

Lopez is a Chicagoland native who can play all over the infield and brings a left-handed bat with experience to the team as the Cubs sort through their bench options.

Pitchers and catchers report to Mesa, Ariz., Sunday. Tune in for live coverage beginning at 12:30 p.m. on Marquee Sports Network.
