Cubs unveil epic, fan-driven tribute to Jon Lester
“Let’s give them something they ain’t never seen…”
Jon Lester’s walk-out song, “Gonna Know We Were Here,” is dripping with symbolism reflecting his time in Chicago and what he was able to accomplish in a Cubs uniform.
Lester was a major force in changing the culture around the club, signing a free-agent pact with a team coming off a last place finish and helping push the Cubs to the NLCS and — eventually — that elusive World Series championship.
2020 marked the final year of that Lester contract and what a run it’s been for the last six years.
But he never got to say goodbye to the fans that have adored him for the better part of a decade — nor were they able to show their appreciation one last time at Wrigley Field.
So the Cubs released a fan-driven tribute to Lester Wednesday afternoon on social media:
Tenacity on the field. Generosity off the field.
— Chicago Cubs (@Cubs) January 27, 2021
A leader, a teammate, a role model.
A champion.
Thank you for everything, @JLester34. #NVRQT pic.twitter.com/zxzTDYyLdm
What better way for fans to say goodbye to Lester during a pandemic than that?
Lester will return to Wrigley Field May 17 with his new team, the Washington Nationals.
