Darnell Mooney backs Bears quarterback Justin Fields: ‘I feel like he’s comfortable in himself’

With the NFL season one month into the books, the Bears sit at 2-2 and in third place in the NFC North.

The Bears passing game ranks last in the NFL in the early going but wide receiver Darnell Mooney supports his quarterback, Justin Fields, and the passing game.

“There’s a big difference this year than it is last year,” Mooney said on Bear Essentials this week. “I feel like he’s comfortable in himself. Some things, whether it be pressure or they’re sending crazy blitzes or a receiver not winning a route, it’s all things that are connected. But I feel like a lot of teams that have new offenses, they’re doing a little bit of a struggle situation right now, but it’s all a process. As long as we get it done and get it together before the playoffs and win our division, we’ll be perfectly fine and we’ll be good.”

Chemistry remains high between Fields and Mooney as they continue to get on the same page this season.

“It’s very sharp and very honest with our connection; it’s very unique and I feel like it’s real as well. It’s something that we continuously work on and something that grows on throughout the process of what we are in now. It’s something to grow for sure,” Mooney said.

Last week against the Giants, Mooney notched a season-high 4 catches for 94 yards, including a 56-yard catch from Fields.

That success came on the heels of Week 3, when Mooney found an unconventional way to get some work in following the Bears’ win over the Texans. After the game, he went back to the end of Soldier Field and worked with the JUGS machine.

“I feel like it’s hand-to-hand on both sides. Something to clear your mind and something positive at the end of the night/day and then also just getting better as well. Slowing down the ball with your eyes and just getting a lot of catches with it. I think it works both sides,” Mooney said.

The Bears face another divisional opponent on Sunday as they travel to Minnesota to square off against the Vikings. In 4 career games against the divisional opponent, Mooney has 23 catches for 241 yards and 1 touchdown.

“I like playing the Vikings a lot. It’s one of my favorite stadiums to play in. It’s a very beautiful stadium, good atmosphere and those strong DBs that they have. The front four is very nice with the guys they have this year. It’s going to be a game for sure. It’s something that we can’t take lightly and these games count as two. If we win this one, it’ll be a big confidence booster and and a big booster in our division as well,” Mooney said.
