Epstein talks scouting changes, position focuses in the MLB Draft
Cubs president of baseball operations Theo Epstein joined Cole Wright and Len Kasper to discuss the 2020 MLB Draft with the Cubs having the 16th pick in the first round. The one position of focus this year is on the mound.
“It’s deep in terms of pitching, both in college and high school,” Epstein said. “[There’s a] lot of good high school position players. Depending on how the board breaks, it might be a little thin with college position players, but you never know…”
With the MLB Draft reducing from 40 rounds to 5 rounds due to the COVID-19 pandemic, it caused some changes for the Cubs’ scouting process.
“It’s been a crazy process,” Epstein said. “We have Dan Kantrovitz as our scouting director. He hasn’t even been able to be in the same room as all of the scouts. We’ve been doing everything over the computer. It’s been great. It allowed us to start a little bit earlier and have a really thorough, creative process. I feel like we’re definitely ready.”
