Fan who fell from Clemente Wall at Pirates-Cubs game reveals injuries
Kavan Markwood, the man who fell 21 feet from the Clemente Wall during the Chicago Cubs’ matchup against the Pittsburgh Pirates on April 30 at PNC Park, spoke for the first time about his fall.
In an interview with TribLive, Markwood revealed he had not seen the video showing his fall and described his injuries as “broken everything.”
When speaking more on his condition he stated, “I think when I get home I’ll just put ice on it,” adding, “I’m all right. I can’t really sleep. I have a lot of back pain.”
Markwood was hurried to Allegheny General Hospital, where he is now recovering from his injuries. He has had some encouraging signs along the way, as he took his first steps earlier this week, according to TribLive.
Dr. Allan Phillip, Allegheny General Hospital’s chief medical officer, told WTAE, “I’m happy to say that he’s progressed well, he’s at a point now where he’s off the breathing machine, he’s out of the intensive care unit, and is preparing to move on to the next step, which will be physical therapy, rehab.”
Jennifer Phillips, the mother of Markwood’s girlfriend who set up a GoFundMe wrote to TribLive, “He still has a long way to go — he’s dealing with a broken neck, clavicle and back so there are plenty of obstacles ahead. But he’s showing real strength, and we’re staying hopeful for a smooth recovery. This will also require plenty of rest and following instructions from the great doctors, nurses and staff at the hospital.”
Overall, it’s wonderful news after the scary accident halted the game in the seventh inning and left Markwood with serious injuries to his neck and back.
Markwood will continue his recovery at Allegheny General Hospital and will begin the next steps in his recovery process in the coming weeks.
