Cubs infielder Gage Workman poised to make dream debut in Tokyo

Gage Workman’s unlikely path to The Show is about to get even more exciting.
The 25-year-old utilityman will be part of the Cubs roster for MLB’s Tokyo Series after an explosive spring training that has seen him hit .424 (14-for-33) with 13 RBI and a 1.201 OPS.
Now, Workman has the chance to make his mark on the big leagues as the Cubs prepare to get their regular season underway with a two-game stint against the Los Angeles Dodgers in Japan.
“It was unbelievable – just something you dream of forever,” Workman told Marquee Sports Network’s Elise Menaker. “Being able to make that debut in Japan is just incredible.”

The Cubs selected Workman from the Detroit Tigers in the 2024 Rule 5 Draft, which means the Cubs have to keep him on the 26-man roster all year or else offer him back to the Tigers. His strong spring helped make it an easy decision for Jed Hoyer and the Cubs front office to roster him for the Tokyo Series.

Workman was originally selected by the Milwaukee Brewers in the 14th round of the 2017 MLB Draft out of high school but opted to play college ball at Arizona State University.
He was subsequently drafted by the Tigers in the fourth round of the 2020 draft and played in their minor league system for four seasons. Now with the Cubs, he’s learning to adjust to a new environment.
“The team is awesome, they’re super welcoming. It’s really cool to be here,” Workman said.
The 25-year-old infielder provides another left-handed bat on Craig Counsell’s bench and offers some power and patience at the plate as well as positional versatility.
Workman hit 18 homers with 89 RBI and an .843 OPS with the Tigers’ Double-A affiliate last season while making starts at third base, second base and shortstop.
