‘It would mean a lot’: Bears desperate to buck troubling trend in Packers rivalry

3 weeks agoScott Bair

LAKE FOREST, Ill. – There isn’t a member of the Bears roster who has defeated the Green Bay Packers while representing the franchise. Head strength and conditioning coach Jim Arthur is the only one on the coaching staff having experienced a such a win, but he’s in his second stint with the team and his win occurred in 2015.

That’s pretty wild when you think about it.

This 104-year old rivalry has been one-sided of late, without a Chicago win since Dec. 16, 2018. That amounts to a 10-game losing streak against a hated rival.

That’s a run the Bears desperately need to stop for several reasons.

It would end a three-game losing streak in 2024, bring the team back to .500 and vault it back into contention. It would also stem the tide of Bears drama following a loss on a Hail Mary, a beatdown in Arizona and the firing of offensive coordinator Shane Waldron after scoring just a field goal against New England.

It would kick off the Thomas Brown era well, as the new offensive coordinator tries to fix a currently broken Bears offense.

While rivalries matter more to the fans, the Bears would like to overcome and beat a team that has had their number for a long, long time.

“It would mean a lot. We’ve been getting our ass whooped for a long time now,” cornerback Jaylon Johnson said. “I don’t have a win (against Green Bay), so it would mean a lot to me personally. I’m just looking forward to the matchup, again, the rivalry in itself, but they’ve got some good guys. I have a lot of respect for the head coach and what he does on that side of the ball. I’m looking forward to it.”

The Bears must be at their best despite having little time to mesh with a new offensive coordinator in Brown.

“You have to kind of adjust and you have to adjust fast, because we’re in the division now,” quarterback Caleb Williams said in a Wednesday press conference. “Divisional play. Playing the Packers this week. Obviously a big game for not only us but it’s Green Bay Packers vs. Chicago Bears. It’s an important game for us, not only because it’s divisional but obviously it’s the Packers.”

Even the newest Bears understand the importance of playing Green Bay and what it means for a prideful fan base tired of getting beat. In addition to the 10-game losing streak, the Packers have won 25 of the last 28 matchups. That includes a postseason tussle that ended the Bears’ season one game short of the Super Bowl.

These Bears care most about this campaign and preventing their goals from slipping away.

“I’m really excited about this game,” tight end Cole Kmet said. “This is a game that means a lot to me and to a lot of people in this building. What a great opportunity to get back on track in our first division game, especially against the Packers at home.”
