Matt Eberflus ‘confident’ he’ll be Bears head coach vs. 49ers in Week 14
Bears head coach Matt Eberflus met virtually with the media on Friday, as he always does the morning after games.
It was business as usual from his vantage, despite the legit questions about his job status following a 23-20 loss to Detroit that marked Chicago’s sixth straight loss. Coaching has had a hand in several close losses, none more than a Thursday result when he failed to call a timeout in the waning seconds to give his team a real chance to win or tie the Lions.

Eberflus started his press conference talking about the game, before facing inevitable questions about his standing with the Bears.
He said that his Friday was proceeding as usual, with a meeting with general manager Ryan Poles and team president Kevin Warren on the docket that afternoon. That’s not unusual, either. While it’s possible the content of this one might be heightened, that can’t be assumed.
He’ll go through tape and help create an after-action report about Week 13.
“Then I’ll be working in to San Francisco,” Eberflus said. “Again, those are conversations we’ll have and, again I’m confident that I’ll be working on San Francisco and getting ready for that game.”
Eberflus was then asked if he has been given certainty that he’ll be the Bears head coach next week. His answer wasn’t concrete.
The operation’s been normal, in terms of debrief after the game, coming in, grading the tape, meeting with the coordinators,” Eberflus said. “It’s been a normal operation.”
With one exception. Players aren’t in the building today, as a matter of NFL procedure. They get the long weekend off and will return to Halas Hall on Monday.
He didn’t seem concerned about the long layoff without addressing the players, many of whom spoke out against his coaching decisions late in Thursday’s loss.
“I’ve talked to a few players,” Eberflus said, “and I’ll reach out to a couple more guys as we go through this day today.”
There was nothing concrete to state the Eberflus will be retained through the season or even the weekend. The only real affirmation from the nine-minute meeting was that Eberflus remains the coach right now. If that’s the case heading into next week, it’s hard to imagine the Bears making a declaration about that.
Eberflus said his conversations with Poles and Warren to this point have been standard.
“I had several conversations with the guys,” Eberflus said. “I always meet with (them) in a debrief after the game. We talked about the game, decisions that were made, plays that were made and plays that weren’t made. We talked about the whole. I’ll meet with those guys later on this afternoon, but that was the normal operation we have postgame.”
