MLB Rumors: Alex Bregman decision could come ‘soon’

1 year agoTony Andracki

The seemingly endless string of Alex Bregman rumors could be nearing its end.

And it very well could end with him in a Cubs uniform on the North Side of Chicago.

ESPN insider Buster Olney wrote Monday that Bregman “is likely to land with the Red Sox, Cubs or Tigers soon; sources in the Astros organization are skeptical he’ll return to Houston.”

Olney went on to write that any sort of deal with Bregman and the Cubs would be similar to the one the team signed with Cody Bellinger – on a short-term deal with a high yearly salary.

That is consistent with the rest of the reporting we’ve seen surrounding Bregman and the Cubs, especially lately.

The Cubs are projected to win 90 games, according to PECOTA, and seen as the frontrunner in the National League Central.

But the rest of the NL is packed with powerhouse teams including the Dodgers and Mets, who have spent extremely aggressively this winter.

Bregman would fill a clear hole for the Cubs, who are still sorting through all their options at third base. Top prospect Matt Shaw is likely to see the most playing time at the hot corner at the moment but the Cubs would certainly raise both their floor and ceiling by adding a 2-time All-Star like Bregman to the lineup.

Signing Bregman would allow the Cubs to keep Shaw in the minors for more seasoning or serve as depth around the infield. Shaw – the team’s consensus top prospect – was drafted as a shortstop and has played second base and third base in the minors.

That versatility would be especially helpful for the Cubs as Nico Hoerner works his way through offseason surgery on his arm.
