NaTallia Urlacher, niece of Bears legend, produced epic March Madness moment

Queue up One Shining Moment by David Barrett because it is officially March!

With March comes the madness of unforgettable moments on the hardwood. Such was the case for Fremd’s NaTallia “Coco” Urlacher, niece of the legendary Bears linebacker Brian Urlacher.

On Friday night, Fremd High School faced off against Loyola Academy in an IHSA Girls Basketball playoff game that went down to the wire. With 11.9 seconds left on the clock in the game’s first overtime, Loyola was at the free throw line looking to ice the game and advance to the state championship.

After a missed free throw that would have stretched Loyola’s lead to four, Urlacher secured the rebound and pushed the ball up the floor. She drove to her left, spun back to her right, stepped back and nailed the three to send the game into the second overtime.

The momentum for the Vikings in the second overtime was too much for Loyola to overcome. Fremd went on to win 80-74. Urlacher finished with 32 points and 17 rebounds for the Vikings.

She certainly has learned from her uncle how to take a game and flip it on its head. The buzzer beater helped propel Urlacher and Fremd to their victory in the second overtime.

‘‘As soon as it left my hand, I knew it was going in,’’ Urlacher told the Chicago Sun-Times after leading the Vikings to the win.

There were no lies told there. The shot was nothing but net.

It is certainly redemption for such a dominant player who fell short in last year’s playoffs after losing in the semifinals. This time, Urlacher made certain to leave no doubt with her performance.

The Vikings advanced to the IHSA Class 4A state championship where they will face Kenwood Academy High School on Saturday at 8 pm.
