NFL Draft: Bears land their franchise QB in Caleb Williams

1 week agoTony Andracki

No surprise here: The Bears have selected quarterback Caleb Williams with the 1st overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft.

Williams, 22, was a star at USC, winning the Heisman Award during the 2022 season. He was seen by just about everybody around the game as the top quarterback prospect in a loaded draft.

Over the last 2 seasons with USC, Williams has thrown 72 touchdown passes with only 10 interceptions. He has also racked up 8,170 passing yards, 518 rushing yards and 21 rushing touchdowns.

The move became clear for the Bears when they traded away Justin Fields last month.

The Bears currently have only 2 QBs on the roster — Tyson Bagent and Brett Rypien — and Williams is expected to take over as the team’s starter.

“Really intelligent guy,” Poles said of Williams. “He came across as a really good teammate. Easy to talk to, down to earth. We’ve talked through this process about you know the whole Hollywood thing. He’s all ball, wants to work, wants to get better, wants to win as a team.

“That’s the No. 1 thing for him on top of being successful. So, I think the biggest thing is does he fit with our culture and what we’re trying to do? And all signs were that he does, so that’s a positive.”

The Bears are coming off a season in which they went 7-10 but they finished with some momentum by winning 4 of their final 6 games. The defense is considered among the Top 10 in the game entering 2024 and GM Ryan Poles added to the offense by trading for veteran receiver Keenan Allen and signing running back D’Andre Swift and tight end Gerald Everett in free agency.

Williams will also have DJ Moore and Cole Kmet to throw to as offensive weapons with first-year Bears offensive coordinator Shane Waldron calling the plays and devising the scheme.

With the No. 9 pick in the 2024 Draft, the Bears added another weapon for Williams by selecting wide receiver Rome Odunze.

Odunze, who turns 22 in June, is a 6-foot-3, 215-pound receiver who had a stellar 4-year career at Washington.

He caught 92 passes for 1,640 yards and 13 touchdowns during his final season, notching 17.8 yards per catch.
