Arthur Smith, Bears complete interview for head coach vacancy
UPDATE: The Bears announced on Wednesday afternoon that they have completed their first interview with Arthur Smith, current Pittsburgh Steelers offensive coordinator and former Atlanta Falcons head coach.
Add another name to the list of NFL coaches the Bears have requested to interview for their head coaching vacancy.
ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported Monday afternoon the Bears have requested to speak with Vikings defensive coordinator Brian Flores as well as Steelers offensive coordinator Arthur Smith:
Smith, 42, spent three seasons as the Falcons’ head coach from 2021 to 2023. He went 7-10 each year and was unable to guide Atlanta to the playoffs.

Prior to that stint with the Falcons, Smith spent two years as the Tennessee Titans’ offensive coordinator.
Smith engineered a dynamic offense in Tennessee, as the Titans ranked second in the league in offensive yards and fourth in points scored in 2020.
The Falcons didn’t have quite the same success during Smith’s time as head coach. Their ranks over his three years on offense:
2021: 29th in yards, 26th in points
2022: 24th in yards, 15th in points
2023: 17th in yards, 26th in points
The Steelers finished the 2024 campaign 23rd in the NFL in offensive yards and 16th in points scored.
Smith played college football at North Carolina, where he was a guard.
He spent the 2006 season as a graduate assistant at UNC before making the jump to the pro game with a role as a defensive quality assistant with Washington. After a year at Ole Miss, Smith was hired by the Titans and filled a variety of assistant coaching positions before becoming the offensive coordinator in 2019.
Since the Steelers are in the playoffs, the Bears cannot interview Smith virtually until three days after Pittsburgh’s wild-card round game.
