The Bears list of interview requests continues to grow. It reached 14 on Wednesday afternoon, when they reportedly submitted an interview request for Washington offensive coordinator Kliff Kingsbury.

Per NFL rules, the Bears can interview Kingsbury three days after the Commanders’ opening-round playoff game on Sunday.

The Kingsbury connection is obvious, considering he used to work with Bears quarterback Caleb Williams at USC. He was a senior offensive analyst in 2023, Williams final season in college football.

The pair have a great rapport and a high level of respect for one another. That has been clear when one is asked about the other, which has happened several times this season.

“I’ve been around Kliff. I know what type of guy he is,” Williams said on Wednesday. “I know he loves football. I know he wants to win. He’s a competitor. … So, I would say that being around him, knowing him, asking him questions and things like that, I think, obviously, if he was here I’d probably have more to say.

Kingsbury also had head coaching experience, with a four-year run leading the Arizona Cardinals. He compiled a 28-37-1 record during his tenure there.

Kingsbury has been with Washington this season and has done tremendous work designing a scheme that has allowed Jayden Daniels to thrive. His offensive concepts could help Williams tremendously. There’s little doubt about that.

There is some question about his ability to lead and entire team, an area where he struggled in Arizona. There’s also some question about his interest in joining this head-coaching cycle.

In his previous comments on the matter, he seemed uncertain about whether he would seriously consider leaving the Commanders.

“We’ll see how everything plays out but I’m very happy here,” Kingsbury said. “This has been an awesome, awesome place and has really helped me kind of rekindle my love for the sport.”
