Robbie Gould recalls Bears’ epic 2006 comeback against Cardinals
History was made on Sunday in the Bears’ 24-17 victory over the Tennessee Titans.
Since 2000, there have only been 3 teams in NFL history to overcome a 17+ point deficit without an offensive touchdown.
Those teams are the 2024 Bears, the 2016 Kansas City Chiefs and the 2006 Bears, who notably came back from a 20-0 hole to beat the Arizona Cardinals 23-20 on Monday Night Football.
The 2006 comeback is considered to be one of the greatest in Bears’ history and was a highlight in a special season which saw the Bears win the NFC Championship and appear in Super Bowl XLI.
While recapping the Bears’ victory over Tennessee, Robbie Gould – who was in his 2nd NFL season in 2006 – reflected on what made that comeback against the Cardinals possible.
“I do think that Olin Kreutz at halftime of that game was very motivational, saying, ‘Hey, listen, we didn’t have a lot go well or right for us in that situation,'” said Gould.
Gould then went on to note the defensive touchdowns from Mike Brown and Charles Tillman that gave the Bears the spark they needed in the second half before recently inducted Pro Football Hall of Famer Devin Hester returned a punt for the game-winning touchdown.
Much like 2006, the special teams and defense were key contributors in the Bears’ win on Sunday.
On special teams, Daniel Hardy blocked the momentum changing punt which Jonathan Owens returned for a 21-yard touchdown while Cairo Santos was a perfect 3 for 3 on field goals.
On defense, Tyrique Stevenson took a 43-yard interception back for a touchdown that would give the Bears a lead they would never give up.
“I’m happy to be a part of the 3 and not 1 of the 519, that’s for sure,” said Gould referring to the 3-519 overall record of teams in such situations.
